Top Fantasy Defenses for 2011
Top Fantasy Defenses for 2011
1. Green Bay - This is a solid defensive unit across the board. With Charles Woodson, Clay Matthews, Tramon Williams, B.J. Raji, A.J. Hawk, Nick Collins to name but a few it's possible to go on all day about the merits of having this defense. Plus it's hard not to want to root for Clay Matthews blowing up quarterbacks every Sunday.
2. San Diego - The Chargers were a solid unit last year and there is no reason to say otherwise this season. Not to mention that the potent Chargers offense should be much improved with key players coming back from injuries enabling the defense to stay off the field and fresh for a lot more time than last year.
3. Pittsburgh - You can't go wrong with the Steelers defense. Every year they are in the top 5 for fantasy defenses and this year will be no different. They play very well together as a unit and are especially good at drafting to fill holes in what is already a formidable defense. They do drop to three because they play so much better with Polamalu on the field, but he has been so injury prone in recent years you are guaranteed a few games without him this season.
4. New York Jets - The Jets defense keeps getting better and with Darrelle Revis getting what he wanted this team could be someone to be reckoned with. This is a well coached defense that believes in the system. Don't believe me; look at what they did to the Patriots in the play-offs last season.
5. Baltimore - The Ravens could be the best run defense in the league, but their secondary is starting to age a bit. Even without a strong secondary they are still a very stout defense and are quite capable of producing some decent fantasy defense numbers all year long.
Sleepers
Philadelphia The Eagles are a young defense that has loads of potential. They are fast and aggressive and have been getting better each year. Throw in the fact that they have a solid secondary this team could rack you up some serious fantasy points if they play up to their potential.
San Francisco The Niners are similar to the Eagles in the fact they are young, aggressive and have a huge upside. What they don't have is a decent secondary but luckily for them they play in the NFC West and have the 28th easiest schedule in the NFL. If you don't pick up one of the good defenses early it might be worth your time to wait a couple rounds and pick up the Niners for cheap.

UFC 133 Evans Vs. Ortiz: Statistical Breakdown
With such an exciting UFC 132 in the books, we have what looks like a sub par UFC 133 ahead of us. At first glance the event as a whole doesn't to have the star power or the dynamite matchups that are almost always guaranteed to deliver. However these events are often the one's that fans will be disappointed after deciding not to watch them live and later hearing about all the nonstop action. Let's make sure this doesn't happen to us this time and take a closer look at the matchups and statistics of each fight to see if there are some key matchups that have the potential of delivering.
Chad Mendes vs. Rani Yahya
This is a match up between a great wrestler and a great grappler. It's not a matter of Mendes taking Yahya down, but a question of him capitalizing when they are on the ground. Mendez has 22 successful takedowns in 5 fights, but Yahya averages a fight ending submission for every 5 minutes he's in the Octagon. One thing we can count on though is it probably will not be a slug fest, since both of them combine for just over 200 successful strikes in a combined 13 fights.
Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Alexander Gustafsson
Vladimir will most likely have the wrestling advantage in this bout, however Alexander does average 4.23 submissions for every 15 minutes of fighting. Combine that with a striking defense of 41% and Vladimir might bring in a game plan of standing and banging a little. Both are coming off a two fight win streak, so they most likely will have that extra confidence which will add some excitement to the fight.
Rory MacDonald vs. Mike Pyle
This might be a fight full of big statistics because they both average over 8 minutes of fight time per fight. They are both very well-rounded fighters with above average stats in the standing department; however Rory should have a definitive advantage with takedowns. He hasn't been taken down yet and has over 12 successful takedowns in 3 hard fights. Mike Pyle on the other hand has only a 29% success rate on takedowns and a 71% takedown defense.
Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara
This will be one of those fights that are hard to predict because Jorge Rivera will want the fight standing, and Alessio Sakara will want the fight on the ground. Jorge has 674 attempted strikes in his last 14 fights with only 6 successful takedowns. Alessio has a 77% success rate in takedowns, while 94 of his 248 successful strikes were from the ground. It is just a matter of whose strength will be stronger of the two.
Vitor Belfort vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
This is yet another fight that could easily be fought on the ground just as much as standing. Vitor has a striking accuracy of 48% and has some knockout power, however he only has a 44% takedown defense. Yoshihiro Akiyama on the other hand has a striking accuracy of 39%, but he makes up for it with a 79% take down success rate while not being taken down once in stat recorded fights. They both are coming off losses, so they might be a bit hesitant, but when there is action, they both should receive decent stats in their respective fields of expertise.
Rich Franklin vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
This fight should be one of the more exciting fights to watch of the night. Rich Franklin never really disappoints win or lose. He has one of the higher strikes landed per minute with a number of 3.99. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has below average stats when it comes to striking and takedown accuracy. Franklin should have the advantage in almost every category except the submission game and could post up big stats no matter where the fight goes.
Rashad Evans vs. Tito Ortiz
Even with the change in the main event, we still see this matchup playing out basically the same way as if Rashad was going to fight Phil Davis. The first stat I would put money on is that it goes the distance. Rashad averages a fight time of almost 11 minutes while Tito's average is over 10:30. Both fighters have some striking power but rely mostly on their wrestling ability. This fight could see a lot of time in the clinch position against the fence or on the ground in the guard. Rashad Evans has 85 total takedown attempts in 15 fights while Ortiz has over 122 attempts in 23 fights. The only excitement that we might see coming from this fight is that Ortiz has some confidence in his hands after coming off that knockdown of Bader and might let them go a little more. Rashad will most likely have some ring rust in which adds to the chances of him getting caught before shaking it off. But most likely this will consist of a stalemate type fight in which we will hear a lot of boos from the crowd and little actual stats from the fighters.

Top 5 Fantasy Running Backs for 2011
1. Adrian Peterson - Minnesota
Peterson is one of the most explosive backs in the NFL and can score from anywhere on the field. He did have an off season scoring but look for those numbers to improve in 2011. In previous years a big concern about AP was his tendency to fumble but that disappeared last year with only one fumble lost all season. Minnesota's new coach is dedicated to the run and you can expect Peterson to have at least 25 carries a game next season. The only concern here is that Peterson can be injury prone especially as the season drags on.
2. Chris Johnson - Tennessee
Chris Johnson is another guy that can rack up fantasy points from all over the field. He is a dangerous runner who is the focal point of his team's offense. He is also a threat out of the backfield with the ability to catch balls in the flat and break them open for huge gains. If you are in a PPR league you may consider taking Johnson over Peterson because he will generate you a lot of points from the amount of looks he gets in swing routes.
3. Jamaal Charles - Kansas City
Jamaal Charles came close to the rushing title last season and that's saying a lot because he was essentially splitting time with Thomas Jones. With Jones starting to get up there in age, look for this to shift a lot more into Charles's favor this season. What hurt his stats last season was the lack of touchdowns (8) but that number should increase significantly next season especially with the increase in touches.
4. Arian Foster - Huston
After his 231 yard 3 touchdown performance against the Colts week on last year everyone that drafted him thought they were fantasy geniuses, but after a while Foster rocketed back to earth. While a very solid back who can put up huge fantasy numbers he can have some problems with consistency which is a fantasy team killer. His 15 yard performance in week 15 killed fantasy playoff teams everywhere. We aren't saying stay away from Foster just be warned that he is occasionally going to drive you crazy with an abysmal fantasy performance.
5. Michael Turner - Atlanta
The Falcons run a very balanced offense and Turner is the key to their ability to do that. Though there are a few quality backs behind him he gets the majority of the touches and rarely dips below 20 a game. The Falcons don't run to many routes for him out the backfield so he doesn't have much PPR value but he is consistent and that's a big plus in the fantasy world. Look for a slight improvement in Turners yards this season but he is probably going to stay around a respectable 12 touchdowns.
Sleepers
LaGarrette Blount - Tampa Bay
When Blount got carries last year he made the most of them by putting up some decent numbers. He saw limited action at the end of last season and should be off many fantasy owners radar, especially if your league is drafting early. Blount can be volatile so make sure you check up on him before you draft him to make sure he is on the straight and narrow with his team.
Beanie Wells - Arizona
Though Wells didn't have much production last year that was more due to the Cardinals ridiculous commitment to the pass than touches. He is a bigger, stronger and faster back then Hightower so it would be hard to see him not getting the start. This year Arizona should come out with a more balanced attack and Wells should be the focal point of the running game. Drafting him is a risk but one that could pay off especially if you are able to pick him up in the later rounds.

Top 5 Fantasy Tight Ends for 2011
Picking fantasy tight ends is tough so we went ahead and made it easy for you. We've poured over all the numbers and have laid out 5 tight ends that can help your team get that extra boost you need from an overlooked position. As always be sure to check out our sleepers who should be available in the later rounds of most fantasy drafts.
1. Antonio Gates - San Diego
Gates has been the gold standard for fantasy tight ends for a number of years. He puts up receiver numbers at a position that most fantasy owners don't expect much production at. Some say last year's injury issues were the signal of a start of decline for Gates but even a decline in his numbers still put him on the top of the fantasy tight end list.
2. Dallas Clark - Indianapolis
Dallas Clark spent the majority of last season on the IR and the Colts suffered for it. Manning couldn't seem to find a reliable go to receiver like he had in Clark. Expect him to bounce back from the injury and for Manning to make him a go to guy very early in the season.
3. Jason Witten - Dallas
Witten should return to previous form with the return of Romo to the Cowboys this summer. Witten was a favorite target of Romo's and last year's drop in stats showed. His numbers may not return to the levels of previous seasons but should be high enough for you to give me a good look in your draft
4. Vernon Davis - San Francisco
Davis has slowly been climbing his way into the ranks of top fantasy tight ends. Even with terrible quarterbacks throwing to him each season his numbers have steadily improved. Look for these numbers to increase again this season as he has being used more and more within the 49er's offensive scheme.
5. Jermichael Finley - Green Bay
Finley was a highly touted fantasy tight end last year but ended up missing most the season due to injury. This year should be no different; Finley is a big part of the Packers offense and expect him and Rodgers to get on the same page early this season.
Sleepers Brandon Pettigrew - Detroit
Pettigrew showed flashes of brilliance last season making key plays all over the field for Detroit. The problem is he was splitting time with another tight end; Tony Scheffler. If he can establish himself as the dominate tight end for the Lions and he gets some consistent quarterback play Pettigrew may give you a decent fantasy option for cheap.
Jimmy Graham - New Orleans
Graham is another developing tight end that started to find his niche in the New Orleans offense late into the season. If he develops into a reliable dump off for Brees he could start to see a lot of balls coming his way. You do still run into the problem of having to start a receiver on the Saints, a team that is notorious in the fantasy world for spreading the ball around
